The famous Eye symbol is the symbol of Armenian Aya (Haya), the mother goddess

Aya (in Armenian language aya means great grandmother) was the mother of chastity, as well as the benefactress of the whole human race. Through her the Armenian land exists, from her it draws its life; she is the glory of our nation and its protectress, and for her the ancient Armenians felt intense love and adoration. One of her symbols is water… In ancient times the Armenians felt a certain veneration towards water in motion, which they fear to pollute. Many rivers and springs were sacred, and endowed with beneficent virtues. The sources of the Euphrates and Tigris received and still receive worship. Sacred cities were built around the river Araxes and its tributaries. Even now there are many sacred springs with healing power, usually called “the springs of light”.

Aya is Mother Earth, Great Grandmother who in time transformed into Haya. Some people don’t want to accept it because they think it will return us to matriarchy and the women will rule the men but the case is that it had nothing to do with matriarchy but it had a lot to do with mother worshipping. The symbol of eye is pure feminine symbol which was worshipped by the men too. Eye in Armenian means akn. Originally, akn (that famous eye) was the symbol of female organ which gives the birth (a kid, a new life) like ankh (ankh – kyankh (life in Armenian) was the symbol of life for the Egyptians or the so-called fish symbol for the early christians, they were all mother worshippers.

The symbol of eye has more ancient roots: it symbolizes the birth origin, feminine derivation and principle. In Armenian language AK(N) can be translated as a wellspring (Ակնաղբյուր), eye and it’s connected with the source (աղբյուր, սկզբնաղբյուր, ակունք, սկզբնապատճառ, սկիզբ, ակնաղբյուր), headwaters (ակունք, սկիզբ, ջրի մակերեվույթ), outfall (ակունք, գետաբերան, սկիզբ), outflow (ակունք, արտահոսում, սկիզբ). Anything connected with a DOT IN A CIRCLE is AKN in Armenian: AK(N) of a mill, a hive, a tonir, a cart (Ջրաղացի ակն, Փեթակի ակն, Թոնրի ակն, սայլի ակն) and so on….

AK(N) is a part of both the Sun (AregaAk) and the Moon (LusneAk), (ԱրեգԱկ, ԼուսնեԱկ)… In Armenian we have a number of sayings with AKN.

Some nomadic tribes who conquired the Armenian highland and took almost everything, changed the meaning of Aya, made it dominant matriarchal and started using according to their way of thinking: mainly as an erotic source. But the Armenians who have always had respect towards their women, daughters, anyway, always worship their mothers. They believed that the Mother is the beacon of light, of family. And they have worshipped their mothers who give life to them and their wives who give life to their children. That was the part of holy laws originated in the Armenian highland and have been the part of Armenian heritage.

The letter H is very important for the Armenians, it’s the sound which comes from the lungs when you breathe in or breathe out. I think Aya became Haya with the first breathe, the transformation of the nature into a human being.

    Very interesting post. I suggest the author and readers find out more about Armenian Godess Aya in a fundamental work by Alexander varbedian called “Genesis Aya”.

    • Varbedian himself took the information from other sources and presented it in his own way. the Armenians didn’t give any name to her, they just called her great grandmother which in Armenian language means aya. I don’t agree with Varbedian on a number of fundamental points, i think, he’s changing much on purpose to make the Armenian people go far from their heritage and roots
